Artificial Intelligence Game for Still Life Composition. AVACA is a made-up name for a game available for free on Google Play, which is about competing with Artificial Intelligence to find the best composition for a still life painting.
The game is available here. Or here through my website. Inspired by the work of the Italian painter Giorgio Morandi, the game tries to simulate the artistic effort required to position some objects for a still life painting while competing with artificial intelligence. The algorithm is trained with a collection of 3D models compositions similar in arrangement to the paintings of Giorgio Morandi, in conjunction with some aesthetics scores empirically calculated using some basic composition rules, like symmetry, rule of thirds and balance. The entire application is made in Unity3D and it uses the MLagents plugins and the Barracuda script that allows deploying machine learning model directly into the application. The application required a lot of computation to run and it might slow at times. By playing the game the users contribute to the generation of new 3D models arrangements that can be then used to retrain the algorithm.
